I have been doing work experience for two weeks now and I love it! It is in Scoil Na Mainistreach, an all boys primary school. I have always wanted to be a primary school teacher so I chose this for my first work placement to see if enjoyed it.
So far I have really liked it, the first day I went in I was so nervous because I wasn't sure what they would have me do, I got there at ten to nine and waited for the office to open, when it did they called me in, everyone was so friendly and nice, I wasn't sure what to expect! I met my supervisor and the principal of the school. For the first day I helped make up newsletters to give out to all the classes and helped sort through old files that were of no use any more. It was tough trying to find my way around for the first while but I got used to it. All the staff were really welcoming and nice to me. For a while I printed off forms and newsletters for students and organised them into their classrooms and that took longer than I expected! Then it was my lunch time and I went into the staffroom which was really scary because I'd never been in a staff room before and I didn't know what it would be like but everyone was really lovely and they all asked me about myself and told me about their jobs and teaching and that was really interesting. After my lunch I went back into the office and sorted out more files and shredded papers that were of no use anymore to the school. When the bell rang at the end of the day I got to go home. I really enjoyed my first day at work experience.
Yesterday I had work experience again and I was actually really looking forward to it. I got up, got ready and walked to the school. When I got there the office was already open so I went in and got to work, for the first while I made out more newsletters and I didn't mind doing that because it was easy! It was one of the teacher's birthdays so before break we had cake and sang happy birthday and she was delighted! After break I was in a junior infant class for the rest of the day and I really enjoyed that, I helped them do maths, playing different games to get them to count and add up. The teacher was really nice to me too. When that was over I helped the boys make a card for their helper Trish because it was her birthday, they all came over and drew a picture or wrote their name on the card and then put a fingerprint of paint on it aswell, it was lovely and Trish was so happy with it!
When it was lunch time I had to stay in the classroom with them because they couldn't go out to the yard because it was raining and I got to talk to them all they were all so sweet! I put on horrid henry for them to watch as the lunch went on. For the rest of the day I just helped the teacher hand out newsletters and get them all ready to go home. When the bell went for them to go they all said goodbye and I had to go back up to the office. When I got back I had my lunch and when that was finished I had to go around to every single member of staff to with a sheet for them to sign and it took the rest of the day! It was so hard to find everyone and I even went into a few classrooms twice! But I finally got all the signatures and when I got back the bell went and I went home. I really enjoyed that day because I got to meet some of the children and some new teachers too.
